Variable-length Codes

Variable-length codes are codes in which different symbols are represented using different numbers of bits. In data science, variable-length codes are used to compress data by assigning shorter codes to more frequently occurring symbols and longer codes to less frequently occurring symbols. This technique is used in various data compression algorithms such as Huffman coding, arithmetic coding, and Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) coding. Variable-length codes are also used in natural language processing for text compression and in image and video compression to reduce the amount of data that needs to be transmitted or stored.
