Sequential Circuits

Sequential circuits are a type of digital circuit where the output depends not only on the present input but also on the past history of inputs. These circuits have memory elements that store the previous input values and use them to determine the current output. Sequential circuits are widely used in digital electronics, including in microprocessors, memory devices, and communication systems. They are classified into two types: Synchronous and Asynchronous. Synchronous sequential circuits use a clock signal to synchronize the operation of the memory elements, while Asynchronous sequential circuits do not use a clock signal and rely on the propagation delay of the logic gates to determine the output. Sequential circuits are designed using state diagrams, state tables, and state equations, and can be implemented using various technologies, including TTL, CMOS, and FPGA.
