Coordinated Universal Time
Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks and time. It is one of several closely related successors to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). UTC is used by international shortwave broadcasters, aviation and shipping industries, weather services, and other sectors for their communications activities. UTC is also the time standard used in satellite and space operations, where precise timing is critical to mission success. UTC is based on International Atomic Time (TAI), with leap seconds added at irregular intervals to compensate for the Earth's slowing rotation. The addition of leap seconds allows UTC to closely track Universal Time (UT1), which is based on the Earth's actual rotation.
