Personal Information Protection And Electronic Documents Act
The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) is a Canadian law that regulates how private sector organizations collect, use and disclose personal information in the course of commercial business. PIPEDA applies to personal information that is collected, used or disclosed in the course of commercial activities, including the selling, bartering or leasing of donor, membership or other fundraising lists. The Act also applies to personal information that is collected, used or disclosed in the course of providing a commercial service, such as telecommunications, banking, insurance, and travel services. PIPEDA requires organizations to obtain consent from individuals before collecting, using or disclosing their personal information, and to provide individuals with access to their personal information and the ability to correct any inaccuracies. Organizations must also protect personal information with appropriate safeguards, and must report any breaches of security safeguards to the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
