An operating system (OS) is a software that manages computer hardware and software resources and provides common services for computer programs. The operating system is the most important type of system software in a computer system. It acts as an intermediary between programs and the computer hardware. The OS performs basic tasks, such as controlling and allocating memory, prioritizing system requests, controlling input and output devices, facilitating networking, and managing files. It also provides a user interface that allows users to interact with the computer and its applications. Operating systems can be found on almost any device that contains a computer, including desktops, laptops, smartphones, and servers.
