Normal Forms
Normal Forms are a set of guidelines used in database design to ensure data is organized efficiently and without redundancy. The higher the normal form, the more strict the guidelines are. The first normal form (1NF) requires that each column in a table be atomic, meaning it cannot be further divided into smaller pieces. The second normal form (2NF) requires that each non-key column in a table be fully dependent on the primary key. The third normal form (3NF) requires that each non-key column in a table be dependent only on the primary key and not on any other non-key columns. There are higher normal forms, such as Boyce-Codd normal form (BCNF) and fourth normal form (4NF), which have even stricter guidelines.
