Functional refers to a programming paradigm that emphasizes the use of pure functions to solve problems. In functional programming, functions are treated as first-class citizens, meaning they can be passed as arguments to other functions, returned as values from functions, and assigned to variables. Pure functions are functions that have no side effects and always return the same output for a given input. This makes them easier to reason about and test. Functional programming also encourages immutability, meaning that once a value is assigned, it cannot be changed. This reduces the risk of unexpected changes to data and makes programs more predictable. Functional programming languages include Haskell, Lisp, and Clojure, but many other languages, such as Python and JavaScript, also support functional programming concepts.
