Differentiated Services

Differentiated Services (DiffServ) is a computer networking architecture that specifies a scalable mechanism for classifying and managing network traffic. It provides a way to prioritize traffic flows according to their relative importance and allocate network resources accordingly. DiffServ operates by marking packets with a Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) in the IP header, which indicates the level of service required for that packet. This allows network devices to apply policies that prioritize or deprioritize traffic based on its DSCP value. DiffServ is commonly used in Quality of Service (QoS) implementations to ensure that critical traffic, such as voice or video, is given priority over less important traffic, such as email or file transfers.
