Differentiated Services Code Point
Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) is a field in the IP header that enables the classification and prioritization of network traffic. It is used to provide Quality of Service (QoS) by allowing network administrators to assign different levels of priority to different types of traffic. DSCP values range from 0 to 63 and are used to mark packets with a specific priority level. This allows routers and switches to prioritize traffic based on its importance, ensuring that critical traffic is delivered with minimal delay and that less important traffic is given lower priority. DSCP is often used in conjunction with other QoS mechanisms such as traffic shaping and congestion control to ensure that network resources are used efficiently and that critical applications receive the necessary bandwidth and latency guarantees.
